The World Might Like Your Version of The Song Best

1. Imagine by John Lennon

2. (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones

3. Over the Rainbow by Judy Garland

What do these three songs have in common?

They’ve been covered by other artists. A lot.

Ray Charles, Elton John, Avril Lavigne, and Lady Gaga – among others – have performed their own version of Imagine.

Jimi Hendrix, Vanilla Ice, and Britney Spears – among others – have covered Satisfaction.

One of the most frequently performed songs on American Idol, Over the Rainbow has been sung by everyone from Willie Nelson and Eric Clapton to Tori Amos and Me First & The Gimme Gimmes.

You know what this means? It means that people don’t mind one great song sung by many different people. Actually, it means that people WANT a great song to be sung…

In a different voice...

In a different style...

In a different arrangement...

And if it’s a truly great song, it CAN AND SHOULD be sung in thousands of different versions by millions of different people.

This is something to keep in mind when you start thinking,

“Well, this has been said before.”

“Uh, this has been done before.”

“So I can’t do it or say it.”

Sure you can. Because it hasn’t been done or said by YOU.

That personal training business hasn’t been opened…by you.

That biography of @therock hasn’t been written…by you.

That motivational post on that well covered topic hasn’t been posted…by you.

Who cares what has been said or done or written or sung?

Can you imagine a choir where only one person was assigned to sing all the “E” notes, another singing the “G” notes and another singing the “B” notes?

You know what it sounds like when 100 people all sing a high “C,” each in their own voice range and unique tone and timbre?

It sounds awesome.

If something is true…good…beautiful…excellent…and praiseworthy…

It should enter the universe REPEATEDLY. It should come into the world through…

…your voice

…your style

…your composition

…your unique arrangement

And when it does…

There will a be whole audience –probably a very big one – that will love your version BEST.
